These are eye catching! The fanciest type of banner ad is the rich media. These ads pull out all of the stops and whistles! They use audio, video, and even sometimes Java or Shockwave to create an interactive presentation. Purposes of Banner AdsThere are two purposes for placing banner ads around the Internet. Of course, the first purpose of online banner advertising is to draw traffic to the site when uses click on the advertisement. This is called a “click-through.„ Of course, not everyone who views the advertisement will click on it, but the advertisers are hoping that seeing the ad will cause the visitor to note their service or company.Another reason for placing web site banner adds is branding. Branding is the memory effect advertising has on consumers. How to Measure the Success of a Banner AdThe goal of any advertising campaign is to be successful. There are different ways that advertisers measure ad effectiveness. The first way is through clicks. The site will record how many visitors click on the ad and go to the site. Often the sites that are placing the ads will sell the space based on a cost-per-click.Second, effectiveness is rated based on page views. Advertisers will measure how many visitors the published page draws. There is no way to judge how many of these visitors were influenced by the advertisement, but the advertisers are able to know how many people were exposed to their ad. This is another way to charge for banner ads. This is called cost per thousand impressions. Click-through rate is a third way to judge the effectiveness of a web ad. The click-through rate is the ratio of page views to the number of clicks the ad receives, and is usually expressed in a percent. Usually, the click-through rate is under one percent. The final criterion is through cost per sale. This is the measurement of how much of the advertising money goes towards making one sale. Cookies are routinely used to track this activity. The information gathered includes the origin of the site visitor and the length of time spent on the site. Online banner advertising is highly effective, because people surfing the Internet are drawn to the color and animation of well-designed banner ads.
