We All Hate Pop-Ups, So Why Do Advertisers Use Them?

If you have spent any time at all on the Internet, you have been bombarded by intrusive,
in your face types of advertising. The rise of pop-up blockers has only caused advertisers to create more types of intrusive advertising. Pop-up stoppers have just made more types of ads pop up all over the Internet. So if everyone hates intrusive advertising, why do we still have online ad campaigns that are "in your face?" There must be some benefits of pop-up ads, or they would simply disappear.

Intrusive Advertising Types

There are several different types of advertising that are considered intrusive by those who spend time searching the Internet. Each one works slightly differently. But the consensus is that they are all annoying!

Pop-Ups

Pop-up ads are the most infamous type of ad. These are the ads that open a new Internet window when you open a site. Popupblockers work to keep these windows from opening. These ads usually use JavaScript to open. One problem with pop-up blockers is that sometimes they block an action on the site that is not an advertisement.

Pop-Unders

Pop-unders are very similar to pop-up ads, but instead of opening in a new window on top of the browser, they open in a new window under the browser. When the user closes their Internet browser, the ad is there.

Interstitial

An interstitial ad is an ad that loads when you click on a link. Before you are redirected to the new web page, you view the ad for a few seconds. These ads are often animated.

Rich Media

A rich media ad is actually an ad that fits into any of the categories. What makes a rich media ad different is that it has some sort of interaction or animation. Usually rich media ads have a form for the user to fill in or they incorporate Macromedia Flash into their presentation.

Overlays

Overlays are ads that take over the entire web page, either fluttering across the page, or floating down to cover it. They use Macromedia Flash, and it is often hard to figure out how to close the ad in order to see what you want to see on the site.
