The market share is divided between three main ad types. The most popular is keyword search ads, which make up 41% of the ads purchased. Keyword search ads are those that appear on search engines when a user searches for a related phrase or "keyword" search. Google AdWords is an example of this type of ad.

The second most popular ad type is display ads, which appear on websites as banner ads, popup ads, and skyscrapers. They make up 34% of online advertising. Finally, the least popular ad type is classified ads, which are posted on sites to offer products or services. They make up 17% of the online ad market.
Amount Spent on Advertising
The amount that advertisers choose to spend on advertising says a lot about the effectiveness of this type of advertising. In 2005, for example, there was $12.5 billion spent on business online advertising. This amount is up 30% from 2004. Online advertising is growing at a tremendous rate with no sign of slowing down.
Popular Ways to Buy Ads
There seem to be two ways to buy online ads that are the most popular. For example, 46% of the ads purchased online are cost per thousand impressions (CPM) ads. CMP ads are sold based on a cost for ever one thousand people that view the ad. For example, if a site can guarantee that each month 10,000 unique visitors will view their site, and they charge a CPM of $10, then the cost for the ad would be $100 per month.
