Pros of Intrusive Advertising

If Internet users hate intrusive ads, like pop-ups, why are they still here?
Why do advertisers use ads that users find annoying? Obviously there must be some benefits of pop-up ads.

For one thing, pop-up ads have a good click through rate, as far as online ad campaigns go. In fact, overlay ads have around a fifteen percent click through rate. This is five times as high as the three percent rate of banner ads. This is a significant improvement! Internet users have learned to ignore banner ads, but intrusive ads are harder to ignore.

Branding is another benefit of intrusive advertising. When the advertisement is floating across the computer screen, the user cannot help but notice it. Whether or not they click on the ad, they are indeed exposed to it, and this type of branding causes the name of the

company to be in the back of their mind the next time they need to purchase or order that product or service.

Finally, the return on investment of these types of ads is higher than traditional banner ads. They do cost more, but since the click-through rates are higher, the advertiser gets more income from intrusive ads then they will from banner ads. This money is usually enough of a reason to get the advertiser to use this type of ad campaign.

The Cons of Pop-ups

Pop-ups and other types of intrusive advertising also have their down sides. The biggest down side is that customers hate pop-up ads. It is possible that through using pop-up ads, you might alienate some of your customers. Not only that, but sometimes pop-up ads contain scripts that cause browsers to crash.

The biggest con, though, to pop-up ads is that many customers employ pop-up blockers to block these types of ads. This means that many customers do not even see your ad when you use pop-up ads. And what good is an advertisement if a customer does not see it?

So when choosing your next online ad campaign, think twice before choosing an intrusive ad campaign, such as one using pop-up ads. The fact is, you are going to end up losing customers using this type of ad. Either potential customers are going to be so annoyed that they do not click on the ad, or they will be using a pop-up stopper and never see the ad at all.

Another problem with intrusive ad campaigns is that they are becoming less and less used. This is because so many websites have received customer complaints about this type of advertising. This makes website owners think twice before putting this type of ad on their site. Advertisers should carefully way the pros and cons before moving forward with a pop-up campaign. There are many other effective advertising strategies that will not be affected by pop-up stoppers. So when planning an ad campaign, consider ads that will not be stopped by the pop-up blockers that are becoming so prevalent.
